Methodology

PlainCU indexes every federally-insured credit union in the United States by pulling the quarterly NCUA 5300 Call Report, the mandatory financial disclosure every credit union files with the National Credit Union Administration. We ingest the raw dataset, normalize field names, derive composite scores (health, loan-to-share, peer-relative percentiles), and publish a page for every institution, every state, and every pairwise comparison.

Browse paths reflect how members and prospective members actually think about credit unions: by geography (state), by performance (rankings), by shared dimension (categories: charter type, field of membership), by conceptual theme (topics: safety, rates, loan products), and by direct comparison (compare two CUs). Every path terminates in primary-source data from the NCUA.
