Credit Union Guides

Expert guides on membership, safety, rates, and financial health, backed by NCUA data.

Methodology

Every PlainCU guide is grounded in the NCUA 5300 Call Report, the quarterly financial disclosure every federally-insured credit union must file with the National Credit Union Administration. We pull the most recently published quarterly dataset (currently Q4 2025), normalize field names to plain English, and derive composite metrics like health score and loan-to-share from the raw reported numbers. Each guide is editorially reviewed by a domain-trained writer who has previously worked on consumer financial education, and every recommendation is checked against the institution's own disclosures before publication. Where supervisory guidance disagrees with industry practice, we follow the regulator's published interpretation rather than third-party commentary.

Guide content is written by the PlainCU editorial team, reviewed against primary source documents including NCUA publications, NCUSIF insurance rules, CFPB consumer guidance, and the Federal Credit Union Act itself. We update whenever the underlying regulatory framework or Call Report field definitions change. Wherever a number appears in a guide, the field is traceable to its specific line on the Call Report or to a public regulator-issued release. We treat the source documents themselves as the authority, not aggregator interpretations, so readers can independently verify every quantitative claim by following the link in the source list below.

Updates land on a quarterly cycle aligned with the NCUA's own publication calendar, which in practice means new figures roll through PlainCU within about sixty days of each quarter close. Historical comparisons reference vintage-tagged snapshots from earlier filings, allowing us to surface trend lines without conflating prior-period numbers with the current snapshot. Where a credit union has merged, been liquidated, or otherwise exited the active list, we tag the change and preserve the historical record so readers researching past performance can still find what they need.
